Brushing vs. Spraying?

A lot of customers as me which method is better. Most prefer that we as a contractor back brush. While we like to back brush every home, it isn't always necessary. Most siding products have a veneer on them and therefor have no pores to absorb the paint. Just as with painting a car the surface is smooth. Therefore, the spray application works just fine.

Back brushing is great for real woods. If you have cedar siding or even cedar trim it is recommended that it be back brushed. However, when the house has already been painted. The wood should again, have a smooth texture. Therefore, it isn't always necessary to back brush. However, if bare wood is showing, primer is needed. If primer is needed than most likely it will be brushed on. This will create an almost smooth surface for spray applied paint to adhere. Primer also has chemical bonding properties.

So next time you as your contractor whether he back brushes or just sprays, ask him if he will brush the primer thoroughly on all bare wood surfaces. Or if you must, brush all the real wood surfaces.

Thanks,

Recent Omaha Storm Damage Repairs

We can all agree that there has been a lot of damaged created by the storms in June and July. Most homes show signs of paint flaking around the trim on windows. This is especially true on the west side where the weather caused the most damage. This becomes a major concern as most likely the caulking of the window may have also been damaged. The worst thing that could happen is to disregard this. If your window begins to leak within the wall and you don't notice, it could be a year before you notice your siding rotting out. A simple prime, caulk and paint will do your window wonders.

This is also true for the rest of your house. The storm may have weakened the coat of paint on your home. Most homeowners do not realized how vital paint is to the protection of your siding. It guards against UV and moisture damage while maintaining a vibrant home. It is important to make sure that the hail did not tear off any paint, even of the smallest amount. If your home experienced damage in other areas it may be wise to invest in a paint job within the next couple of years. If anyone has any other questions feel free to post in this forum.
